AAC, or augmentative and alternative communication, is a term that is used to refer to any sort of support that a person may use to communicate. AAC comes in many forms, including: speech-generating devices/tablets, communication boards, picture-based systems, tangible symbols, recorded voice output systems, etc.

AAC may be right for your child if:
They are non-speaking
They can say some messages, but this does not meet their communication needs
They are experiencing a lot of frustration due to their communication difficulties
Their communication difficulties are impacting their ability to participate in activities that are meaningful to them

Great news - not at all! This is a very common misconception and concern. The research shows us that using AAC only has the potential to help someone to speak more. It should never stop or replace speech!
-
Nope! There are no prerequisites for introducing AAC. We are passionate about always presuming potential and celebrating your child’s strengths.
-
There are many different ways for someone to access AAC. These include: using their hands, using their eyes, using other body parts to access a special button (called a switch), and/or using body movements. Part of our job is to help find the access method that works best for your child - we’ve got you!

The New AAC evaluation includes:
A review of your child’s history
An assessment of their current skills and areas of need
Trialing of several AAC systems
The goal of this appointment is to identify which system we think will be the best fit for your child. We will recommend an extended trial with that system (usually about 1 month long) so that it can be used in different environments and with different communication partners. Once the trial ends, we will summarize results of the trial period and make recommendations for next steps. Recommendations could include: trialing a different system, or pursuing long-term use of the system your child trialed.
